Time for a refresh
I don’t know about you but I love Christmas decorating. So much so, that every year for the past 8 years, I have hit the after-Christmas sales to grab up all those lovely stockings, garland, ornaments, etc. at 50-75% off.
However, this year has been one of decluttering and purging. Therefore, on Thanksgiving weekend when pulling out the decorations for Christmas, I decided that I would pare down to just a few items. In thinking about this, I wanted to figure out a way to refresh my decorations not only each year but also each holiday or season without having to buy or STORE a bunch of things.
However, I realized instead of putting away the decorations I use other 11 months of the year, that I could incorporate them …
Using what you’ve got
Refreshing your decorations can be as easy as repurposing what you already have. For instance, the feature photo at the top, I’m using a Santa ceramic that I purchased a few years back. In years past, I’ve put that puppy by itself on our coffee table or buffet. However, I realized instead of putting away the decorations I use other 11 months of the year, that I could incorporate them and create a vignette. Creating vignettes from things you own can be easy as long as you follow a few rules:
- Group like items by theme, color or type.
- Group in odd numbers (1 counts as well)
- Vary the height within the groupings
In this vignette, I used the Santa ceramic, some candleholders I got from Etsy a few years back, a “reduce and reuse” vase creation, and my usual wooden tray and coasters that I display year round.
With this combination, I created something that stood out more on the coffee table than the Santa ceramic by itself.
What items do you display on your coffee table at Christmastime?
